Welcome to Pondhawk Photography!
Revised: November 7, 2008
At the root of any photographic adventure, there is the light. “…It is about light. Nothing else. Not cameras, not film, certainly not lenses, not texture or subject matter. All the other stuff is simply the tools for capturing light…” (Richard Murphy). We love the light and the wonder of capturing images showing light’s patterns, intricacy and power.
We’re Jim and Dawn Dowd.
Both of us have been looking through a view finder for many years. We didn’t begin photographing together but that’s how we’ve ended up. Fortunately, we are still very happy about that circumstance. Although we both began with 35 mm SLR film cameras (well, Jim actually started with a Brownie), we pursued different media pathways… until recently.
Jim uses 35 mm, medium and large format cameras; and was primarily a black and white photographer. He has recently begun to explore the digital image world (or, as he puts it, “gone over to the dark side”). He's enjoying the new freedoms of digital photography, but will never forsake the magical alchemy of the darkroom. He has just begun to learn the computer part of digital photography.
In 1991, Dawn tried a digital camera and film became a thing of the past. Jim is a true photographer with all the technical know-how to produce an exceptional image in the first shot. Dawn pursues the path of volume: many images – an occasional nugget. The expression Dawn often uses is “even a blind pig finds an acorn occasionally”. Where we once debated the virtues of film vs. digital, now we discuss the qualities of light (with Jim evaluating exposures and f-stops, and Dawn just shooting lots of images because she loves to see through the camera lens).
We are discovering that scanning is an art in itself. When the learning curve is acceptably met, Jim’s black and whites will be on the site.
We travel whenever and wherever possible. Images on the site are from the Bahamas, Ireland and the USA. Many images are from our home state of Massachusetts. The pictures represent fly fishing trips, river running adventures, gawking tours, road trips and morning walks. We are always “seeing” pictures and our camera equipment is usually easily accessible.
The gallery designated as “Bookmarks” presents some of our images available solely as magnetic bookmarks produced by Magnetic Bookmark
http://www.magneticbookmark.com/). You can purchase from Magnetic Bookmark or you can E-mail us and we will happily fill the order.
The “Note Cards” gallery images are available as 5 ½” x 4 ¼” blank note cards (including envelopes), printed on high quality card stock. To purchase them, please e-mail us at: dawn@pondhawkphotography.com.
If you would like something done with an image that isn’t offered through the site, contact us and we will do our best to accommodate. Having said that, we are often on the road and in places where E-mail is not accessible so please be patient; we will respond. If you are in a rush, chances are really good we aren’t your solution.
All Pondhawk Photography images are copyrighted. Please do not copy from the site.
Thank you for allowing us to share our images with you. We hope at least one of our pictures will move you in some way. Taking pictures is a wonder; sharing them is a miracle.
Health and Happiness to all who sneak even a peek...
